School is back in session in Floyd County this week, with youngsters returning to their seats Tuesday, and teachers beginning the day before.

Elementary schools start classes at 8 a.m. and dismiss at 2:45 p.m. Middle and high school start and end 15 minutes later.

Prior to the start of school, several area groups helped families get ready. At Town Branch Christian Victory Fellowship, Pastor Tom Nelson and wife Earlene oversaw the distribution Saturday of 500 bags of school supplies, as well as shoes, clothes, toiletries and other items. On the same day, Lindsay Wilson College had a back-to-school festival on the campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College, complete with a backpack giveaway, inflatables, games and a drawin for prizes, such as bicycles.

The Mountain Arts Center played host Monday to more than 1,000 Floyd County School employees and board members with a back to school celebration for the 2012-13 school year.

Floyd County Superintendent Henry Webb, who was in attendance, said he was pleased with the showing by staff and support personnel. “We had a great Opening Day at the MAC for our team. We celebrated some successes, shared some information, honored our retirees and enjoyed listening to Mike Rayburn, a motivational speaker who focused on helping us to always think ‘what if.’”

Webb said Floyd County school staffers are excited about the new school year and “look forward to it being the best year yet for the kids of Floyd County.”

Webb also thanked the staff of the Mountain Arts Center for helping to make the event successful, and the Prestonsburg Police Department for their assistance with traffic. “They are truly an asset to our community.”

A legislative perspective
For nearly 150 years now, our nation has set aside a day to remember those who paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom. It is perhaps fitting that Memorial Day, which traces its roots to the Civil War, was itself the source of conflict for so many years. It is believed to have begun in ...

JWT — Putting it together
It’s a clear, muggy day in May, and the sounds of saws, nail guns, birds, and music carry across the still air here. And that means preparations for the opening of Jenny Wiley’s summer season are well under way. The debris that had gathered during the fall and winter has been swept away and bu...
