PRESTONSBURG — Floyd Students were recognized this week after strong showings in the recent District Spelling Bee, held at Big Sandy Community and Techinical College.

Floyd County Supt. Henry Webb announced the results of the 2013 Floyd County School District Spelling Bee earlier this week. Savannah Taylor Keathley, from John M. Stumbo Elementary, is the district winner, while Brenden Wright, from James D. Adams Middle, is the runner-up.

“Congratulations, Savannah, and good luck at state,” Webb said. “These students did an amazing job representing their schools and the district.”

Students between grades 4 and 8 who have won their school competition move on to compete in the district spelling bee.

This year’s school winners who participated in the district competition include:

• Brenden Wright, from Adams Middle

• Destiny Boyd, from Allen Elementary

• Kara Miller, from Allen Central Middle

• Christopher Adkins, from Betsy Layne Elementary

• Izabella Shepherd, from Duff

• Chloe Howell, from May Valley Elementary

• Bailey Addington, from McDowell Elementary

• Gage Compton, from Osborne Elementary

• Samson Allen, from Prestonsburg Elementary

• Kaylie Edwards, from South Floyd Middle

• Savannah Taylor Keathley, from Stumbo Elementary

The spelling bee was held February 22 in the Gearheart Auditorium on the campus of Big Sandy Community and Technical College in Prestonsburg.

Savannah Taylor Keathley is the daughter of Billy Keathley, of Teaberry. She will advance to compete March 9 in the Ford Motor Company Spelling Bee, at the PNC Club at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, in Louisville.
