PRESTONSBURG — Downtown Prestonsburg is this summer’s source for locally-grown produce, as the Floyd County Farmers Market is held in the municipal parking lot every Saturday.

Vendors were set up this past Saturday with an array of vegetables, including squash, tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers and onions. Also on sale were fresh eggs and a variety of locally-produced meats from Appalachian Meats.

Todd Howard, manager of the market, said none of it would be possible without the city’s support.

“I can’t say enough about what the city is doing for us,” Howard said. “Allowing us to set up here has helped us bring in a lot of people.”

Marlin Gerber, who operates Appalachian Meats with his partner, John Reinford, was working the produce tables with his and Reinford’s sons. He agreed with Howard.

“We feel blessed,” Gerber said, when asked how the market has helped his business.

Mike Vance, who works as director of economic development for the city, said the market has seen a lot of success since it opened two weeks ago.

“This past Saturday’s Farmers Market at the Prestonsburg Pavillion was very successful, with several producers and nearly 200 customers,” Vance said.

The market will be open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., every Saturday throughout the summer.
