Two Floyd teens killed in Pike wreck

VIRGIE — An early-morning accident has left two Floyd County teens dead.

According to Kentucky State Police, Jonathan Newsome, 18, of Teaberry, was driving a 1999 Mustang south on Route 3501 around 2 a.m., Friday, when he failed to negotiate a left-hand turn onto Route 1469. The vehicle then struck an earth embankment.

The vehicle had a total of eight occupants at the time of the crash, none of whom were wearing seat belts. Newsome and passenger Alexandra Payge Tipton, 18, of Harold, were pronounced dead at the scene by Pike County Coroner Russell Roberts.

A review of the victims’ social media accounts provides a glimpse into typical young lives, filled with family, friends and celebrations that stand in stark contrast to friends’ public expressions of shock and remorse in the days after the wreck.

“I’m loving life a bit too much right now,” Tipton said on Twitter, just three-and-a-half hours before the crash.

KSP could not provide the identities of the remaining six passengers or an update on their conditions.

KSP accident reconstructionist Bryan Layne is investigating the crash. Layne was assisted at the scene by Trooper Ryan Hamilton, Trooper Nick Hale and Transtar Ambulance.

This is such a tragedy I just can't believe my little cousin Jonathan is gone. You never know when someone will be taken from you in a instant. I was sitting at a burial when heard the news, and the preacher just had got done saying love one another cause you never know when it's your last day with them. I hadn't realized how precious the words were, but now I know he is right. Life is so short! Rest in Peace Bub you will be missed... love your cousin Tasha

Such a tragedy for the families of all involved in this terrible accident...Peace to those who grieve. Have been on those roads where the accident occurred they are very curvy. Can remember the days when I was young and we would all try to fit into one car....You just never know. Nobody is at fault here..It is Gods will.
