PRESTONSBURG — Earth moving work began this week on the groundbreaking for the construction of the new headquarters of the Floyd County Emergency and Rescue Squad.

The Floyd County Emergency and Rescue Squad has called its current headquarters home since the group’s founding in 1958. The all-volunteer organization was founded following the tragic school bus disaster which claimed the lives of 26 school children and their driver. The building will be decorated in honor of those 27 victims.

The new headquarters, which will be named the Alexander Willis Rescue Facility, will be located near the mouth of Cliff on Old Abbott Mountain Road. The new facility will be modern in design, featuring eight truck bays and plenty of room to house the squad’s moving water rescue boats and extrication units. The building will also house a new Emergency Operations Center that can be utilized by the county and surrounding counties.

According to Captain Timothy Cooley, the new building is being financed by both donations and coal severance. “People are really coming out to help,” Cooley said. “We have many people who have donated time and labor to make this happen. That’s for sure.”

Davis Bros. Construction is donating the equipment and labor to make the ground ready to begin construction.

The squad is also selling decorative personalized bricks which will adorn the interior of the buildings foyer upon completion. The bricks will be on sale through December 2013.

According to Cooley, memorial bricks will be purchased by the squad for the founding members, as well as each of the 27 people who perished in the school bus accident.

For information on purchasing a personalized brick to be placed in the new headquarters, contact the Floyd County Emergency and Rescue Squad at (606) 886-8114.

The rescue squad hopes to be able to take up residence in the new building before end of the year.

A legislative perspective
For nearly 150 years now, our nation has set aside a day to remember those who paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom. It is perhaps fitting that Memorial Day, which traces its roots to the Civil War, was itself the source of conflict for so many years. It is believed to have begun in ...
