Two students arrested after making threats

PRESTONSBURG -- Only four days removed from one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history, two Prestonsburg teens are facing charges of terroristic threatening after making threats against fellow students in school.

Prestonsburg Police Chief Michael Ormerod says officials got information Saturday night that there might be a threat of violence against Prestonsburg High School.

“Sunday, officers interviewed several people, and an investigation was started,” said Ormerod. Superintendent Henry Webb, PHS principal Jerry Butcher, Mayor Jerry Fannin, and several others were interviewed as part of the investigation.

Ormerod says that through the interviews, police felt like they had enough indication that there was a credible threat against the school. “Late Sunday evening they put him into custody. He was lodged at Breathitt County and charged with second-degree terroristic threatening,” Ormerod said.

Ormerod said that the juvenile's home was never searched as part of the investigation, but did indicate that his parents had been cooperative.

Ormerod said another juvenile at the school made threats to several people Monday. That student was charged with third-degree terroristic threatening and also arrested and lodged in Breathitt County Detention Center. Ormerod said the targets of the threats were interviewed, as well as the accused himself. He made a statement that he was going to take some people out at the high school, or some other places, Ormerod said.

According to police, the juvenile in question confirmed what witnesses had told police.

Following the tragic occurrence in Newtown, Conn., Ormerod said any and all threats against students and their schools will be investigated.

“Any indication that we get of a threat of that type, we will investigate, and if warranted we will prosecute. Since it is domestic terrorism, the FBI will also be notified,” Ormerod said.

Ormerod said an FBI field agent from Ashland was present during this weekend's investigation.
