Prestonsburg looks at annexation… again
by Jack Latta
Staff Writer

A familiar theme of annexation was on the lips of council members Monday during a regularly scheduled meeting of the Prestonsburg City Council.

City Council agreed to look into annexing property from the Stonecrest entrance up to the Floyd/Johnson county line. The move would not cross the river to take in Auxier, but would take in Highlands Regional Medical Center.

According to city officials, the city will put together plans and begin advertising for their ideas in December. The plan calls for the city to host a Town Hall meeting on January 28, 2013, for citizens to voice concerns or support for the proposed annexation.

Officials say that they plan to have spokespeople to address property taxes, insurance, and city utilities during the town hall forum.

The annexation looks to take in property along Route 321 that is not already within the city limits, as well as homes at Lakeview Village.

“Those people have expressed some interest in coming into the city,” said Sharon Schoolcraft.

The City of Prestonsburg has been trying to annex the Highlands Regional Medical Center, with its significant employee tax base, for nearly two decades.
