PRESTONSBURG — A Floyd County grand jury released indictments this week against Ronald and Loretta Wright in the shooting death of Famer Halbert.

The Wrights were arrested in March, after Famer Halbert was shot and killed at his home. According to police records, the Wrights had been visiting at the home of the Halberts before the shooting occurred. Famer’s wife, Lorene, was also shot and wounded during a struggle for the Wrights’ gun. Seven of the Halberts’ grandchildren were in the residence at the time of the shooting.

Ronald Wright has been indicted for one count of murder, one count of attempted murder for allegedly shooting Lorene, and seven counts of first-degree wanton endangerment for “manifesting an extreme indifference to human life” for the Halberts’ children, by engaging in conduct which posed a danger of death or serious physical injury.

Loretta Wright was indicted for one count complicity to commit murder, one count complicity to attempted murder, and seven counts of complicity to first-degree wanton endangerment.

An order to appear was issued by Floyd County Circuit Court Judge John David Caudill on Thursday. The Wrights are both scheduled to be arraigned in Floyd Circuit Court at 9 a.m., Tuesday. Both Loretta and Ronald Wright remain in custody on $500,000 cash bonds.

A legislative perspective
For nearly 150 years now, our nation has set aside a day to remember those who paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom. It is perhaps fitting that Memorial Day, which traces its roots to the Civil War, was itself the source of conflict for so many years. It is believed to have begun in ...
