PRESTONSBURG — Residents and staff of Prestonsburg Health Care Center joined family and friends of Goldie Conn in wishing her a happy birthday Friday.

And it wasn’t just any birthday celebration. Conn, who lived her entire life at Prater Creek until 2009, turned 103.

When asked her secret for such a long life, Conn was at a loss for words.

“She’s got a secret, but she’s going to keep it to herself,” her son, Hubert Conn, himself a youthful 84, said with a smile.

“While you’re young, do what you can, I guess,” Conn finally said.

For her 102nd birthday, Conn asked for a motorcycle ride — her first ever — and received it from Prestonsburg Mayor Jerry Fannin. But the nursing home had some difficulty fulfilling this year’s request — a possum dinner.

Instead, Conn was treated to a birthday party at the nursing home. Mayor Fannin was there, to wish her a happy day, and local music sensation Sundy Best took time out from their preparations for a concert at the East Kentucky Expo Center that night to drop by and sing her some tunes.

The nursing home always tries to go the extra mile for Conn’s birthday, director Lynn Watts said.

“We’re just glad to have Goldie here,” Watts said.

A legislative perspective
For nearly 150 years now, our nation has set aside a day to remember those who paid the ultimate price to protect our freedom. It is perhaps fitting that Memorial Day, which traces its roots to the Civil War, was itself the source of conflict for so many years. It is believed to have begun in ...
