PIKEVILLE – South Floyd came up short in a bid to reach the 15th Region boys’ basketball championship game. Pikeville defeated South Floyd 82-75 in the semifinals of the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Saturday night.
With the win, Pikeville improved to 22-8 and advanced to face Johnson Central in the 15th Region title game.
South Floyd ended its season 21-13 with the loss.
Wyatt Battaile led Pikeville with 30 points. Accompanying Battaile in double figures for Pikeville, Connor Roberts scored 16 points and Kyle Watkins netted 15 points.
The Panthers managed to outscore the Raiders off fast breaks and on points off turnovers by a total, 35-18. Pikeville, under the direction of first-year head coach Elisha Justice, shot 48 percent from 3-point range.
JR Tackett, Brady Conn and Jacob Collins led South Floyd with 18 points apiece. Both Tackett and Conn registered double-doubles, pulling down 10 rebounds apiece.
Tackett distributed the basketball throughout the postseason matchup, registering seven assists.
South Floyd’s bench outscored Pikeville’s reserves 16-9. The Raiders owned a 14-9 advantage in second chance points and outscored Pikeville 36-32 in the paint.
As a team, South Floyd shot 81 percent from the line. The Raiders, however, shot only 29 percent from 3-point range.
Prior to Pikeville topping South Floyd, Johnson Central battled back to beat reigning 15th Region champion Lawrence County 88-87.
