PRESTONSBURG – The Prestonsburg Blackcats are set to host the Pikeville Panthers in Week 0 of the 2015 Kentucky high school football season. On Friday, Prestonsburg visited Letcher County Central for a preseason matchup against the much-improved Cougars.
“We did okay in the scrimmage,” Prestonsburg Coach John DeRossett said. “We started out a little shaky and then settled in and played good. It is way too early to tell much about this team. We are still moving guys around and looking at them in different positions. We are a mix of four-to-five guys with some experience and five-to-six guys with little to no experience. The junior varsity played on one end and several of those guys played hard on both sides of the ball and will move up as they continue to develop. In a perfect world, we would like another scrimmage and be then be able to open up in Week 1. But that is not the case. Instead, we have to get ready for a very good Pikeville team on Week 0.”
Prestonsburg ended the 2014 season 10-3 following a loss to district rival Shelby Valley in the Class 2A, Region 4 championship game.
Pikeville, following a loss to Paintsville in the second round of the Class A, Region 4 semifinals, concluded the 2014 season 11-1.
Former Prestonsburg Blackcat Chatlin Jarrell is now a Pikeville Panther. Jarrell transferred to Pikeville near the end of the 2014-15 schoolyear.
Kickoff for the Prestonsburg-Pikeville football game is set for 7:30 p.m.
