Rebels roll past Phelps in 2015 debut

PHELPS – Four-time defending 15th Region volleyball champion Allen Central rolled in its 2015 season-opener, shutting out host Phelps 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Preseason 15th Region favorite Allen Central, under the direction of veteran head coach Larry Maynard, prevailed 25-9, 25-4, 25-15.

The Rebels entered the 2015 season ranked 15th in the Kentucky Volleyball Coaches Association (KVCA) Preseason State Poll.

Katie Kendrick paced Allen Central in the win over Phelps. Kendrick, one of the state’s top players, delivered a match-high 17 kills for the Rebels.

As a team, Allen Central registered 39 kills.

Emily Johnson (six kills), Sarah Grindrod (five kills), Hayley Pinson (four kills), Julia Flanery (three kills) and Amber Stumbo (two) also contributed around the net in the win.

Lauryn Stumbo provided six assists for the Rebels, who hosted their annual Allen Central Volleyfest as a final preseason tuneup.

Defensively for Allen Central, Grindrod supplied five blocks.

Allen Central was visiting Belfry on Thursday. Results from the Allen Central-Belfry volleyball match were unavailable at press time.

The Rebels are scheduled to visiting South Floyd for a 58th District/Floyd County Conference match on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Allen Central is slated to venture to Lexington for the Bluegrass Invitational Volleyball Tournament at Lafayette High School Aug. 28-29.
