PRESTONSBURG – Paul Burchett’s first game as the head coach of the Prestonsburg High School girls’ soccer team couldn’t have went much better. Playing on the road didn’t phase Burchett’s team as the Lady Blackcats topped host Pikeville 9-1 on Tuesday.
Pikeville dropped to 0-2 with the loss. Lawrence County blanked the Lady Panthers 10-0 in another season-opener on Monday.
Prestonsburg secured a lead early in the contest and never faltered.
Five different Prestonsburg players provided scoring in the convincing victory. Leading Prestonsburg offensively, Hannah Little delivered a hat trick. Little scored three goals and dealt out two assists for the victorious Lady Blackcats.
Directly behind Little in the Prestonsburg scoring column, Carly Burchett contributed two goals.
Aiding the Prestonsburg offensive effort, Jackie Kidd, McKenzie Little and Kaylee Williams added one goal apiece. Kidd also provided a pair of assists.
Burchett, Haley Fitzpatrick and Jillian Kidd chipped in one assist apiece for the Lady Blackcats.
Thriving defensively, Prestonsburg goalkeeper Maddy Ousley limited Pikeville to only one goal.
The Lady Blackcats are slated to visit Boyd County on Saturday.
Prestonsburg’s remaining schedule will include games versus Perry County Central, Letcher County Central, Sheldon Clark, Johnson Central, Rowan County, Shelby Valley, Paintsville, Pikeville, Belfry, Lawrence County and Hazard.
The Lady Blackcats are due to host Pikeville on Sept. 17.
