FLOYD COUNTY – Floyd County high school football teams are headed into 2015 season openers. All four Floyd County high school school football teams will take the field for season-openers on Friday night. Kickoff for each high school football game involving a Floyd County team is slated for 7:30 p.m. A look at three matchups featuring four Floyd County prep football teams follows.
Allen Central vs. Phelps: Allen Central will host former Class A, District 8 foe Phelps for its season-opener on Friday night.
The Rebels ended the 2014 season 3-8 following a loss to Paintsville in the opening round of the Class 2A State Playoffs.
Via Kentucky High School Athletic Association realignment, Allen Central moved up to Class 2A, District 8. The Rebels accompany East Ridge, Betsy Layne, Leslie County, Prestonsburg and Shelby Valley in their new six-team district.
Phelps finished its previous campaign 0-10-1 after a first round setback.
Betsy Layne at South Floyd: Familiar Floyd County foes Betsy Layne and South Floyd will meet in Hi Hat on Friday night. The Bobcats won last year’s meeting 64-44, prevailing in a shootout.
Betsy Layne concluded the 2014 campaign 6-5 after falling to Danville in the first round of the Class 2A State Playoffs.
South Floyd, following a first round loss to Fairview in the Class A State Playoffs, carried a 5-6 record out of the 2014 season.
Prestonsburg vs. Pikeville: The Prestonsburg Blackcats will entertain the Pikeville Panthers in one of the state’s top games in Week 0 of the 2015 Kentucky high school football season.
Pikeville edged Prestonsburg 30-29 when the two teams met in a 2014 season-opening game.
After falling to Shelby Valley in the 2014 Class 2A, Region 4 championship game, Prestonsburg packed a 10-3 record out of the 2014 season.
Following an upset loss to Paintsville in the second round of the 2014 Class A State Playoffs, Pikeville finished 11-1 in 2014.
