ASHLAND – On August 17, the Tug Valley Bass Anglers fishing club held its sixth tournament of the 2015 season on the Ohio River in Ashland. Twenty-nine anglers competed in the event with Brandon Staten finishing first.
The Ohio River has been fairly stable for the last month and was in great shape for the tournament. The water was normal elevation and stained with a slow current.
Weather for the tournament was good with sunny skies, light winds and an air temperature around 90 degrees.
The fishing was a little tough. Reports all summer said the fishing was slow and they were right. While there seemed to be a good number of fish caught the keepers were hard to come by.
The main pattern for this tournament was to fish top water in the morning then switch to soft plastic lures and crankbaits fished around any hard cover and grass in one to six feet of water on the main river. Lures that imitated bait fish were the top producers.
The top finishers are as follows: 1st – Brandon Staten (5 fish), 5.92 lbs.; 2nd – Lynn Fields (3 fish), 4.7 lbs.; 3rd – Michael Salyer (3 fish), 3.67 lbs.; 4th – Mitch Salmons (3 fish), 2.76 lbs.; 5th – MO (1 fish), 2.50 lbs.; 6th – Chris Taylor (2 fish), 2.27 lbs.; 7th – Lacy Edmiston (1 fish), 1.88 lbs.; 8th – Keith Pacific (1 fish), 1.83 lbs.; 9th – Brad May (1 fish), 1.61 lbs.; 10th – Kevin Marcum (1 fish), 1.34 lbs.
