GOODY – Local coaching legend Phillip Haywood continues to add accomplishments to his resume.

The CBS MaxPreps high school sports section recently published their feature regarding the Top 25 winning-est coaches of all time and active winning-est coaches of all time. There’s no surprise that Coach Haywood was cemented into that list and continues to improve each year.

The CBS MaxPreps top 25 winning-est coaches of all-time list is published yearly and shows incorporates the win-loss formula of all high school football coaches throughout the country. Belfry Pirates Head Coach Philip Haywood ranked 12th in the nation among active coaches with the greatest number of wins. Haywood’s record is 389 wins with 127 losses and zero ties. Coach Haywood also ranked 22nd amongst the most winning-est high school coaches of all time.

Haywood began coaching the Belfry Pirates 31 years ago, and the Pirates are coming off back-to-back Class 3A state championship seasons and have a good shot at making a third straight appearance in the Commonwealth Gridiron bowl championship game again this year.

Coach Haywood began his career as an assistant coach at Tates Creek High School back in 1972. He soon returned to his alma mater, Prestonsburg High school, where he obtained his first head coaching position and led the Blackcats to their first ever playoff appearance. Haywood coached at Prestonsburg for nine years before taking the position at Belfry High School.

During his 40 season as Belfry’s head coach, Haywood has led the Pirates to 317 victories, averaging 10 wins per season. The Belfry Pirates have made six state runner-up appearances and won four state championships.

Haywood has been named the Louisville Courier-Journals coach of the year three times, and either the Class AA or Class AAA coach of the year seven times. In 2013 he was voted as the best High School Football coach by USA Today.

Belfry will begin their season against Tates Creek of Lexington during the Pike county Bowl. Belfry has a tough schedule this year but Coach Haywood is looking to add more wins to his resume and climb the later to the nation’s most winning-est coach.

Philip Haywood is entering his 31st season as the head coach of the Belfry High School football team.
