INEZ – The Prestonsburg Lady Blackcats earned their first 57th District win in the 2015 season on Tuesday, topping the host Sheldon Clark Lady Cardinals 7-1 in a girls’ high school soccer game.
With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 4-0-1.
Following the loss, Sheldon Clark dropped to 3-2.
Jackie Kidd paced Prestonsburg with a game-high four goals. Aiding the Prestonsburg attack, Carly Burchett scored two goals and dealt out a pair of assists. Hannah Little, another productive Lady Blackcat, dished out one assist.
Excelling defensively, Prestonsburg goalkeeper Maddy Ousley limited Sheldon Clark to only one goal in the 57th District contest.
“We played well and took another step forward I thought,” Prestonsburg Coach Paul Burchett said. “Sheldon Clark is a good team. They are much-improved from last year and we knew we needed to play well. The girls did a good job in the first half of possessing and creating chances but just weren’t really capitalizing. We really came out after the break and stepped it up another notch. Jackie (Kidd) got it going. She’s been playing well but not finishing. Tonight, she finished. I also thought Haley Fitzpatrick played her best game so far. We count on her to be our rock in the middle of the field and she did that tonight. When she’s that aggressive and smart in the middle, it turns Carly and the girls up front loose. It was a good start to district play for us.”
My-Josepfine Saltskar netted Sheldon Clark’s lone goal. Saltskar scored off an assist from Gladys Meade.
Prestonsburg was visiting Johnson Central at press time on Thursday. Results from the Prestonsburg-Johnson Central girls’ soccer game were unavailable and will appear in the next edition of The Times.
