PIKEVILLE – Michelle Landeiro got loose for a goal with 51 seconds to play, giving Union College a 2-1 win over the University of Pikeville in a women’s soccer game on Wednesday night at the Bob Amos Complex.
Union’s Jessica Austin, who was closer to the net, sent a pass backwards to Landiero who fired the ball in from just outside the right corner of the box. It was a low bullet, finding the bottom left half of the goal.
Sixteen minutes earlier, it was Kristin Meece who tied things up at 1-1 for Union with a goal from the opposite side of the box. Meece took a pass, possessed it around one defender, then sent the ball in untouched from 20 feet.
At halftime, UPIKE was enjoying a 1-0 lead after Macarena Acuna popped in a highlight-reel score in the 32nd minute. After a cross from Lyndsey Jones, Acuna gathered herself just outside the left side of the box and bent a looping shot over the outstretched hand of Bulldog keeper Kendall Ellington.
It was a clean sheet for Lara Verhulst at the half after making three impressive saves, but eventually the big shot advantage for Union won out. For the game, the Bulldogs led in shots 16-5, including a 6-3 lead in shots on goal. Union also tallied a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Union’s Ellington was pulled out of the goal to start the second half, giving way to backup Juliana Schardong who earned the win with one save and no goals allowed.
