LEBANON, Tenn. – Block errors and inconsistent attacking led to the University of Pikeville volleyball team losing at Cumberland University in Mid-South Conference play on Saturday afternoon. Cumberland blanked the Bears 3-0.
The Bulldogs (9-7, 3-3 MSC) gave the Bears some gifts with 14 service errors, but made up for it by outhitting them .330 to .246. UPIKE didn’t help itself by committing six blocking errors and also giving up 12 aces to the Bulldogs while striking just four of its own.
Cumberland’s Maci Lerno led all players with 15 kills at a .414 clip while also picking up four digs. Caprisha Webster just missed joining her in double figures with nine kills.
UPIKE (9-12, 0-8 MSC) got eight kills from Sydney Hall on just 11 swings (.545), as well as a block and two digs. Connor Cook chipped in with six kills and Kaitlyn Welsh finished with five. Rachel Murphy picked up 10 digs and Savanna Zakman dished out 18 assists in the short match.
It was just a 17-14 deficit for the Bears late in the first set before the Bulldogs went on a 5-1 run to put things away. It was tied 19-19 in the second set, but a 3-0 Cumberland run gave it just enough separation to hold on for a tight 25-23 win.
Keeping up with the trend of being in sets, the Bears had a 12-10 lead in the third before Cumberland five unanswered points to take a three-point lead, followed by a 5-1 run later in the set to close out the match.
Pikeville was hosting Alice Lloyd at press time on Tuesday. The Pikeville-Alice Lloyd volleyball match ended too late to make this edition.
