BETSY LAYNE – In just over two months, Allen Central will begin its quest for a fifth straight 15th Region volleyball title. The Rebels, under the direction of longtime head coach Larry Maynard, one of the state’s top high school volleyball coaches, compiled an 8-0 record an event at Betsy Layne earlier in the week.
On Monday, Allen Central defeated Raceland twice and also posted wins over Leslie County and Prestonsburg in four 45-minute matches at Betsy Layne.
The Rebels remained in the win column on Tuesday, posting wins over Paintsville, host Betsy Layne, South Floyd and Johnson Central during Betsy Layne’s event.
Allen Central is set to defend another championship. The Rebels will compete in the Mid-Summer Classic tournament at Lindsey Wilson College on Friday. Allen Central won the Lindsey Wilson College-hosted tournament in 2014.
Seven seniors are poised to lead the Rebels. Seniors Jannah Halbert, Katie Kendrick and Sarah Grindrod have been named team captains for the 2015 season. The remainder of Allen Central’s senior class is made up of Haley Smith, Breanna Thompson, Haley Pinson and Emily Johnson, all of whom are also experienced players.
The most experienced player in the group, Kendrick has been playing volleyball since fourth grade.
Allen Central compiled a 31-8 record in 2014, finishing ahead of Pikeville (29-11), Paintsville (25-6), Johnson Central (23-11), East Ridge (23-12), South Floyd (21-7), Belfry (20-14), Betsy Layne (20-15), Shelby Valley (12-12), Pike County Central (10-17), Phelps (10-19), Sheldon Clark (8-15), Prestonsburg (8-17), Lawrence County (4-17), Piarist School (4-19) and Magoffin County (0-23) in the 15th Region.
The Rebels outlasted Pikeville 3-2 (23-25, 25-22, 25-13, 25-27, 15-7) in the 15th Region championship match.
