P’burg edges Paintsville in girls’ district tournament

INEZ – Prestonsburg edged longtime rival Paintsville 2-1 in the 57th District Girls’ Soccer Tournament at Sheldon Clark on Monday.

With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 13-5-2 and advanced to meet Johnson Central in the 57th District championship game on Tuesday night. Results from the district title tilt were unavailable at press time and will appear in the Friday, Oct. 16 edition of The Floyd County Times.

Following the loss, Paintsville concluded its season 9-10-1.

Prestonsburg, under the direction of first-year head coach Paul Burchett, received scoring from a pair of players. Jackie Kidd and Jillian Kidd scored one goal apiece for the Lady Blackcats in the hard-fought win.

Carly Burchett provided an assist on one of Prestonsburg’s two goals.

Pacing the Prestonsburg defensive effort, goalkeeper Maddy Ousley held Paintsville to only one goal.

In the other game played as part of the 57th District Girls’ Soccer Tournament’s opening round on Monday, Johnson Central shut out tournament host Sheldon Clark 10-0.

Numerous players were involved offensively and defensively for Johnson Central in the victory.

With the win, Johnson Central improved to 14-2-1.

Sheldon Clark exited its latest campaign with a 9-9 record.
