INEZ – Prestonsburg edged Johnson Central 2-1 on Wednesday night to win the 57th District girls’ soccer championship.

Johnson Central scored midway through the first half to take a 1-0 lead and carried the same advantage into halftime.

Jackie Kidd scored off of an assist from Carly Burchett with around five minutes left in the game to allow Prestonsburg to pull even at 1-1.

With less than a minute left in regulation, Jillian Kidd passed a ball over the defense and senior Hannah Little ran on to it and put the ball into the net to give Prestonsburg a 2-1 lead and propel the Lady Blackcats to the win.

Prestonsburg captured its second district title since 2007.

“I’m so happy for the girls,” Prestonsburg Coach Paul Burchett said. “They’ve worked hard this year and now they are accomplishing the goals that we set at the beginning of the year. It’s great to see their work paying off. We trailed all night, but we always believed we could win. We talked a lot about playing to win and not just playing not to lose. And that’s what they did. I’ve seen a lot of soccer games, and that last five minutes was about as good as I’ve ever seen. We just never quit. We have had a lot of injuries this season, but the girls just keep stepping up when they have to. Whether its playing more minutes, or a different position, they keep filling in and getting the job done. Our defense has been our strength all season and tonight was no different. We held the best offensive team in the region to one goal with Jana Jarvis and Kaylee Williams, two backline starters, on the sidelines with injury. Jillian Kidd, like she has done all year, was amazing at center back. And Maddy Ousley played fantastic in goal. But the real difference was the way Makayla Minix, Makensie Willoughby and Haley Shepherd stepped up on that backline with Jana and Kaylee out. Not to mention the work that Haley Fitzpatrick brings every game defensively as a holding mid. It was a great night but we aren’t finished yet. We go into the region next week with a great chance and that’s our next goal.”

District all-tournament team: Maddy Ousley (goalkeeper), Jillian Kidd (center back), Haley Fitzpatrick (center midfield) and Carly Burchett (center midfield) represented Prestonsburg on the district all-tournament team.
