Volleyball: Pikeville shuts out West Virginia Tech, Midway

Rachel Murphy helped to lead Pikeville to wins over West Virginia Tech and Midway.


PIKEVILLE – It was a perfect day for the University of Pikeville volleyball team on Saturday as it posted a pair of 3-0 shutout victories over visiting West Virginia Tech and Midway during a tri-match at UPIKE Gym.

With the wins, the Bears improve to 14-19 overall on the season. It’s also the second time this season that UPIKE has won back-to-back matches by a 3-0 score. The first match against West Virginia Tech was a rematch of the season opener that the the Bears won in five.

On Saturday, Sydney Hall was the leader against Tech, posting 10 kills and Cassidy Tackett chipped in with six. Savanna Zakman was efficient with 27 assists and Rachel Murphy came up with 14 digs.

In the nightcap against Midway, Tackett took over as the offensive leader with eight kills on nine swings for a whopping .889 hitting percentage, the highest recorded for the Bears this season. As a team, UPIKE hit .239 against Midway as Hall added seven kills and Connor Cook tallied five.

Zakman dished out 17 assists in the finale of the tri-match, while Hall led with eight digs and a team-best two blocks.

UPIKE is 4-4 in its last eight matches as it tries to build some momentum for the final stages of the regular season. Left on the slate is a trip to nationally-ranked Georgetown on Oct. 27 and trip to Shawnee State (Ohio) on Nov. 2. Outside of Mid-South Conference play, UPIKE will face Midway on the road in the finale on Nov. 5.

The postseason is set to begin on Nov. 12 with the first round of the Mid-South Conference Championship at South Warren High School in Bowling Green.
