EASTERN – Tournament host Allen Central won the 58th District Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, shutting out Betsy Layne 3-0 in the championship match.
With the win, Allen Central improved to 30-5.
Betsy Layne dropped to 28-8 with the loss.
Both Allen Central and Betsy Layne advanced to the 15th Region Volleyball Tournament at Shelby Valley.
The Rebels controlled much of the 58th District title match, winning 25-11, 25-23, 25-17 over longtime rival Betsy Layne, who accompanied them in the 15th Region Top 5 heading into the championship contest.
Allen Central’s Katie Kendrick was named the 58th District Volleyball Tournament Most Valuable Player. Kendrick ranks as one of the state’s top high school volleyball players.
Numerous Allen Central players excelled throughout the 58th District Volleyball Tournament. Rebels Lauryn Stumbo, Sarah Grindrod, Hayley Pinson, Jannah Halbert, Haley Smith and BreAnna Thompson were also named to the All-Tournament Team.

Prior to meeting Betsy Layne in the championship contest, Allen Central blanked South Floyd 3-0 on Tuesday. The Rebels beat South Floyd 25-7. 25-11, 25-10.
Betsy Layne had advanced to the district championship match after defeating Prestonsburg 3-1 (25-12, 25-19, 22-25, 25-17) in the opening round.
Along with Allen Central and Betsy Layne, Johnson Central., Phelps, East Ridge, Paiuntsville, Belfry and Pikeville advanced to the 15th Region Volleyball Tournament.
The Allen Central volleyball program has won four straight 15th Region championships.
