ROBINSON CREEK – Allen Central captured its fifth consecutive 15th Region volleyball championship on Thursday, shutting out 58th District/Floyd County Conference foe Betsy Layne 3-0 in the 15th Region Tournament title match at Shelby Valley High School.
With the win, Allen Central improved to 32-5 and advances to the KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament.
Betsy Layne ended its season 30-9 with the loss.
The Rebels, under the direction of veteran head coach Larry Maynard, defeated familiar rival Betsy Layne 25-21, 25-9, 25-10.
Leading Allen Central to its fifth consecutive region championship, 15th Region Player of the Year Katie Kendrick delivered a match-high 21 kills. Following Kendrick, Sarah Grindrod added 10 kills for the Rebels.
Other players contributing for Allen Central in the region championship-clinching victory were Lauryn Stumbo, Hayley Pinson, Jannah Halbert, Kelsie Jackson, Kyra Harmon, Haley Smith, Emily Johnson and Breanna Thompson.
Allen Central will meet 6th Region champion Mercy in the first round of the KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament at Valley High School in Louisville on Friday.
Additional first round matches scheduled for the state tournament are Letcher County Central vs. South Warren; Elizabethtown vs. Owensboro Catholic; Raceland vs. Henderson County; Southwestern vs, South Laurel; Henry Clay vs. Notre Dame; North Oldham vs. Scott and McCracken County vs. Assumption.
