Rebels outlast Knott County Central in double overtime

EASTERN – Junior running back Steven Howard rushed for 237 yards, five touchdowns and six two-point conversions to lead Allen Central past host Knott County Central 56-54 in double overtime as the two border high school football rivals met for a regular-season finale on Friday night.

Allen Central, however, isn’t headed to the postseason. The Rebels fell short of qualifying for the Class 2A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl.

Knott County Central will visit Corbin for a first round game in the Class 3A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl.

With the win, Allen Central ended its season 5-5.

Knott County Central dropped to 4-6 with the loss.

Patriot quarterback Cameron Jones completed 15-of-21 passes for 187 yards and four touchdowns in the short effort. Tyler Kidd hauled in two two touchdown pass receptions and Dalton Cornett and Braden Dobson added one scoring catch each for Knott County Central.

In addition to the victory over Knott County Central, Allen Central posted regular-season wins over Phelps, Jenkins, South Floyd and Betsy Layne during its latest regular-season.

In 10 games, Allen Central, under the direction of longtime head coach Jeremy Hall, outscored opponents 286-233.
