CAMPTON – Allen Central dropped its season-opener, falling on the road at Wolfe County in a boys’ high school basketball game on Monday night. Host Wolfe County used a 13-8 third quarter run to distance itself and defeat Allen Central 60-52.
Corey Rice led 14th Region member Wolfe County to the win, scoring a game-high 20 points.
Directly behind Rice in the Wolfe County scoring column, Deven Stone tossed in 15 points for the Wolves.
Accompanying both Rice and Stone in double figures for Wolfe County, David Spencer netted 13 points.
After facing a two-point deficit (16-14) at the conclusion of the first quarter, Wolfe County led 33-31 at halftime and 46-39 at the end of the third quarter.
Cameron Blevins and Ethan Smith paced Allen Central with 16 points apiece. Narrowly missing double figures, Bailey Wright netted nine points for the Rebels, who are under the direction of veteran head coach Brad Short.
Rounding out the Allen Central scoring, Rico Dominguez and Cameron Nelson finished with six and five points, respectively.
The Allen Central and Wolfe County boys’ basketball teams, longtime rivals, aren’t scheduled to meet again this season.
Allen Central is scheduled to visit Betsy Layne for an early-season 58th District game on Friday. Tip-off for the Allen Central-Betsy Layne boys’ basketball matchup is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Dome.
