Lady Blackcats fall behind early, lose to KCC

HINDMAN – Prestonsburg had the tough task of visiting 14th Region frontrunner Knott County Central for a season-opener on Monday night. Knott County Central used a 22-9 run in the third quarter to pull away to beat the Lady Blackcats 76-43.

The Lady Patriots led at the conclusion of each quarter, thanks in part to outscoring Prestonsburg 23-13 in the opening period.

Hannah Hollifield led a balanced Knott County Central offensive effort, finishing with a team-high 18 points. Joining Hollifield in double figures, Kamryn Thornsberry scored 14 points and Kristen Waugh added 13 points for the Lady Patriots.

Excelling early and late, Knott County Central outscored Prestonsburg 20-13 in the final quarter.

Flirting with double figures, Mayshala Higgins and Stacey Stamper netted nine points apiece in Knott County Central’s win. Additional Knott County Central players were also active on the offensive end as Fallon Slone scored seven points, Steisha Smith four and Summer Anderson two for the Lady Patriots.

Jana Jarvis led Prestonsburg with a game-high 20 points. Jarvis was the only Lady Blackcat to reach double figures in the scoring column. Other scorers for the Lady Blackcats were Allison Hall (six points), Jenna Layne (six points), Reesce Endicott (six points), Tiffany Meadows (four points), Aleiah Newsome (three points) and Alivia Slone (one point).

Prestonsburg is slated to host 15th Region foe Lawrence County in a home opener on Saturday. Tip-off for the Prestonsburg-Lawrence County girls’ basketball game is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Prestonsburg High School Fieldhouse.
