PIKEVILLE – Aundrea Matchen is the Mid-South Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced on Monday. It’s the first career weekly award for the University of Pikeville sophomore.
Matchen led the Bears in a pair of wins last week against Turabo (P.R.) and Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) during a holiday trip to Puerto Rico.
The Louisville native had 29 points and nine rebounds in a 121-62 win over Turabo, followed by a double-double of 37 points and 10 rebounds against Olivet. That point total was a career-high and the most scored by a UPIKE player since Callisha Johnson’s 39 in the second game of the 2013-14 season.
This is the 12th MSC weekly honor for a UPIKE women’s basketball player in program history. The Bears had gone four seasons without one before Khalilah Quigley earned three in last season alone.
Matchen currently ranks sixth in the NAIA in scoring at 20.7 points per game and is 17th nationally in field-goal percentage (54.3). The sophomore has scored in double figures in all but one of the Bears’ (7-0) seven wins this season.
