BETSY LAYNE – Allen Central is the early frontrunner in the 58th District boys’ basketball race after outlasting host Betsy Layne 61-58 in overtime at the Dome on Friday night.
With the thrilling win, Allen Central improved to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the 58th District.
Betsy Layne slipped to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the district with the loss.
“This was a very hard-fought game by both teams,” Allen Central Coach Brad Short commented. “We know that we have a lot of work to do but this was a tremendous win for our kids.”
Allen Central shot 48 percent (24-of-50) from the field. The Rebels finished 8-of-20 (40 percent) from 3-point range.
Allen Central earned the 58th District win in overtime despite shooting only 25 percent (5-of-20) from the fee throw line.
Cameron Blevins led a balanced Allen Central scoring effort with a team-high 17 points. Brett Sammons scored 15 points, Dylan Caudill chipped in 12 points and Bailey Wright added 10 points for the Rebels in the winning effort.
The Rebels outscored Betsy Layne 9-6 in the overtime period.
Betsy Layne shot 48.5 percent (16-of-33) from the field. The Bobcats finished 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) from 3-point range.
Betsy Layne shot 50 percent (22-of-44) from the free throw line.
Jakob Ariaz led Betsy Layne in scoring, finishing with a game-high 19 points.
Accompanying Ariaz in double figures, Zach Hamilton scored 14 points, Grant Osborn contributed 12 points and Kyle Watkins chipped in 10 points.
Hamilton recorded a double-double, grabbing a game-high 13 points in the district matchup.
Ariaz finished one carom short of posting a double-double, exiting the district game with nine rebounds.
Morris Adkins rounded out the Betsy Layne scoring with three points.
AllenC entral is scheduled to host Betsy Layne for a late-season district game on Feb. 5.
