Hamilton pours in 34 points, Bobcats outlast Pikeville

BETSY LAYNE – After opening the 2015-16 season 0-2, Betsy Layne notched its first win on Tuesday night, defeating visiting Pikeville 83-80 in a 15th Region boys’ basketball game at the Dome.

With the win, Betsy Layne improved to 1-2.

Pikeville dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Excelling offensively, Betsy Layne shot 73.8 percent (31-of-42) from the field. The Bobcats finished 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from 3-point range.

Betsy Layne didn’t fare as well from the foul line, shooting only 48.3 percent (14-of-29) at the free throw stripe. But the Bobcats grabbed 40 rebounds and posted 19 assists opposed to 14 turnovers.

Defensively, Betsy Layne registered eight blocks and six steals.

Zach Hamilton paced Betsy Layne with a game-high 34 points and 17 rebounds. Hamilton was one of two Betsy Layne players to record a double-double. Jakob Ariaz added 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Bobcats.

Joining Hamilton and Ariaz in double figures, Kyle Watkins scored 13 points in Betsy Layne’s early-season non-district victory.

Additional scorers for Betsy Layne in the non-district win were Nathan Hall (seven points), Grant Osborn (seven points), Morris Adkins (two points) and Byron Hammond (one point).

The Betsy Layne and Pikeville boys’ basketball teams aren’t scheduled to meet again this season.
