PIKEVILLE – In what’s becoming a yearly tradition, the University of Pikeville dance team qualified for its third straight trip to the NDA Collegiate Dance Championship, according to a qualification certificate received from the National Dance Alliance.

Based off of a video submission of its routines, UPIKE was notified that its outstanding technical ability and crowd involvement skills led to its qualification into the championship.

The event, heralded as the largest collegiate cheer and dance championship in the world, is scheduled for April 6-10 in Daytona Beach, Fla. There will be live video of the event, as well as CBS Sports Network coverage in the weeks following the competition.

UPIKE, which has become a staple for sideline and halftime performances at basketball and football games, qualified for its first trip to nationals in 2014 under the leadership of head coach Jill Darby and has been returning to the beach ever since. Darby is a Prestonsburg native.

The Bears finished fourth in the nation in 2014, followed by a third-place showing in the Challenger’s Cup last season.
