BETSY LAYNE – Betsy Layne pulled away to beat visiting Belfry 78-66 in a boys’ high school basketball game at the Dome on Friday night.
The Bobcats and Pirates, longtime rivals from neighboring counties, met for a non-district matchup.
With the win, Betsy Layne evened its record to 2-2.
Belfry dropped to 0-2 with the loss.
Betsy Layne shot 55.2 percent (32-of-58) from the field. The Bobcats finished 4-for-11 (36.4 percent) from 3-point range.
Betsy Layne won despite shooting only 45.5 percent (1-of-22) from the free throw line.
Zach Hamilton paced Betsy Layne with 26 points and 17 rebounds, both of which were game-highs.
Accompanying Hamilton in double figures in the Betsy Layne scoring column, Jakob Ariaz scored 23 points and Grant Osborn added 21 points for the Bobcats.
Finishing one shot short of reaching double figures, Kyle Watkins scored eight points for Betsy Layne in the non-district win.
Betsy Layne had 19 assists opposed to 16 turnovers.
Defensively, Betsy Layne delivered 14 steals and one block.
Belfry shot 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the field. The Pirates finished 3-of-16 from 3-point range.
Belfry shot 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the free throw line.
Holding a slight advantage on the boards, Belfry managed to outrebound Betsy Layne 37-34.
Four Belfry players reached double figures in the scoring column. Pacing the Pirates offensively, Koleston Blankenship scored a team-high 13 points.
Joining Blankenship in double figures, Cole Bentley and Cameron Catron scored 12 points apiece and Isiah Roblee added 11 points.
Garrett Fannin and Devin Wellman chipped in eight points apiece for the Pirates.
Rounding out the Belfry scoring, Justin Adkins added two points.
The Betsy Layne and Belfry boys’ basketball teams aren’t scheduled to meet again this season.
