HI HAT – Host South Floyd outlasted Prestonsburg 66-61 in a 58th District girls’ basketball game at Raider Arena on Wednesday night.
With the win, South Floyd improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the 58th District.
Prestonsburg dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the district with the loss.
Four players reached double figures in the scoring column for the Lady Raiders. Pacing South Floyd offensively, Brooke Potter scored a game-high 19 points.
Cheyenne Light tossed in 13 points. Leighann Hall netted 11 points and Taylor Berger added 10 points for the Lady Raiders. Registering a double-double, Berger, one of the state’s top rebounders, grabbed 20 rebounds to go along with her 10 points.
“Prestonsburg is always a tough game and we know we have to play our best in order to win,” South Floyd Coach Justin Triplett said. “We played our best half court defense of the year. We normally like to press a lot and get up and down the floor but Prestonsburg is a really hard team to press. I do feel we turned them over in the half-court. Brooke Potter had a great game on both ends of the floor, finishing with 19 points and five steals. Yet again, Taylor Berger stepped it up big with a double-double of 10 points and 20 rebounds. Cheyenne Light and Leighann Hall both chipped in with 13 and 11 points, respectively. I feel we have grown a lot since last year and hope to continue to grow with our success.”
South Floyd shot 31.6 percent (25-of-79) from the field. The Lady Raiders finished 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from 3-point range.
South Floyd shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the free throw line.
Prestonsburg featured four scorers in double figures. Tiffany Meadows paced the Lady Blackcats with a game-high 18 points. Reesce Endicott scored 15 points, Jana Jarvis netted 11 points and Allison Hall added 10 points for the Lady Blackcats in the loss.
South Floyd is scheduled to visit Prestonsburg for a late-season district game on Feb. 6.
