HAZARD – Betsy Layne dropped its second game in a Hazard-hosted holiday tournament at the start of the week. Longtime 15th Region rival Magoffin County pulled away to beat the Ladycats 58-39 in the Lady Bulldog Holiday Classic at Hazard on Monday.
Betsy Layne fell to 5-7 following the loss.
With the win, Magoffin County improved to 5-4.
Magoffin County shot 40 percent (24-of-60) from the field, including 3-of-7 beyond arc. The Lady Hornets shot 70 percent (7-of-10) from the free throw line.
Pacing Magoffin County offensively, Leslee Howard scored a game-high 20 points. Joining her sister in double figures and registering a double-double, Jazzy Howard scored 16 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Lady Hornets.
As part of a seven-player scoring attack, Allie Ohair (six points), Alexis Montgomery (five points), Kennedi Stacy (five points), Laylee Burchell (four points) and Presley Russell (two points) all provided scoring for the Lady Hornets.
Magoffin County forced Betsy Layne into committing 25 turnovers.
Betsy Layne shot only 29.2 percent (14-of-48) from the field. The Lady Cats went 0-for-4 from 3-point range and shot only 44 percent (11-of-25) from the free throw line.
Megan Frazier paced Betsy Layne with 10 points. Frazier was the only Betsy Layne scorer to reach double figures. Barely missing double figures for Betsy Layne, Destiny Compton and Emily Kidd added nine points apiece.
Other scorers for the Ladycats in the loss were Kaitlin Kidd (seven points), Alex Sisco (two points) and Katie Tackett (two points).
