HAZARD – Betsy Layne beat 58th District/Floyd County Conference foe Prestonsburg 69-58 on the final day of the lady Bulldog Holiday Classic at Hazard on Tuesday, Dec,. 29.
With the win, Betsy Layne improved to 6-7.
Prestonsburg dropped to 2-11 with the loss.
The Ladycats shot 48.9 percent (22-of-45) from the field. Betsy Layne finished 3-for-5 from 3-point range in the non-district game.
The Ladycats shot 59.5 percent (22-of-37) from the free throw line in the non-district win.
Three Betsy Layne players reached double figures in the scoring column. Leading the Ladycats to the victory, Megan Frazier scored 22 points.
Joining Frazier in double figures, Emily Kidd scored 19 points and Katie Tackett tossed in 17 points for the Ladycats.
Kidd narrowly missed a double-double, pulling down nine rebounds.
In all, five different Betsy Layne players broke into the scoring column. Kaitlin Kidd scored six points and Destiny Compton contributed five points for the Ladycats in the winning effort.
As a team, Betsy Layne pulled down 34 total rebounds.
Betsy Layne overcame 17 turnovers en route to the win.
Defensively, Betsy Layne posted 18 steals and two blocks.
Longtime district rivals Prestonsburg and Betsy Layne are due to meet at least two more times during the 2015-16 season.
Betsy Layne is scheduled to host Prestonsburg at the Dome on Jan. 22. In another 58th District/Floyd County Conference girls’ basketball matchup, Betsy Layne will visit Prestonsburg on Feb. 3.
