Lady Crusaders defeat visiting Letcher Central

June Buchanan edged visiting Letcher County Central 43-42 on Tuesday night.


PIPPA PASSES – The June Buchanan Lady Crusaders held off the visiting Letcher County Central Lady Cougars 43-42 on Tuesday night.

The game was a defensive battle from the opening tip as neither team was able to find an offensive rhythm. The Crusaders led 9-6 after one quarter.

The second quarter was much of the same but June Buchanan’s Lexi Likens scored six points to spark her team to a 16-9 lead at intermission.

In the third quarter, the two squads continued their battle. Lady Crusader Lindsey Proffitt tossed in nine of her team’s 12 points in the quarter as June Buchanan led 28-20 at the close of the third period.

In the last quarter, June Buchanan stormed back as Shelby Hall pushed in 10 points. Letcher County Central would get as close as one point. But Likens sank two crucial free throws late to put host June Buchanan ahead 43-39.

Letcher County Central drained a last second 3-pointer to end the scoring.

For June Buchanan (4-4) Proffitt led all scorers with 18 points, 15 of which she scored in the critical second half. Megan Hall hit double figures with 10 points and Likens chipped in eight points for the Lady Crusaders. Following Likens in the June Buchanan scoring column, Breana Harrington added six points and eight rebounds.

Destiny Hall led Letcher County Central (4-10) with 14 points. Shelby Hall added 10 points for the Lady Cougars. Alyssa Adams and Paige Caudill added eight points apiece for Letcher County Central in the loss.
