PIKEVILLE – College basketball coaching news website HoopDirt.com named the University of Pikeville’s Kelly Wells its NAIA Coach of the Week on Monday.
Weekly winners are eligible to be named HoopDirt.com National Coach of the Year, which will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
Wells led the Bears to three wins last week to improve to 16-1 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-South Conference. UPIKE began the week with a 75-58 non-conference win at Ave Maria (Fla.) before an impressive 98-63 rout of conference foe and 15th-ranked Lindsey Wilson.
The Bears capped off the week with another conference win, defeating Cumberland (Tenn.) 86-78 in a game they trailed by one at the half. It was only the fourth time in 17 games this season that the Bears did not go into the break with the lead.
Now in his 10th season with the school, Wells has put together a 223-85 record, including one national championship, two MSC Regular-Season titles and one MSC Tournament championship.
