PIKEVILLE – Former state champion Betsy Layne’s stint in this year’s 15th Region All “A” Classic was a short one. Paintsville prevented Betsy Layne from advancing in the small-school regional tournament, defeating the Bobcats 71-60 at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Saturday.
Betsy Layne dropped to 6-7 with the loss.
With the win, Paintsville improved to 4-8.
Darren Morris paced Paintsville with a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds.
Paintsville featured three scorers in double figures as Chris Allen posted 18 points and Ryan Murray added 10 points.
Seth Williams and Roger Maynard narrowly missed double figures, scoring nine points apiece for the Tigers in the victory.
Rounding out the Paintsville scoring, Tanner Smith and James chipped in six points and four points, respectively.
The Bobcats witnessed the tournament game slip away.
Betsy Layne shot 44 percent (22-of-50) from the field. The Bobcats finished 4-of-15 (26.7 percent) from 3-point range.
Betsy Layne shot 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from the free throw line.
Four Betsy Layne players reached double figures in the scoring column. Leading Betsy Layne, Zach Hamilton scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Bobcats.
Jakob Ariaz ranked as Betsy Layne’s second-leading scorer and rebounder, adding 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Kyle Watkins netted 13 points and Grant Osborn added 11 points for the Bobcats.
Nathan Hall rounded out the Betsy Layne individual scoring, finishing with three points in the setback.
The Bobcats committed 16 turnovers in the loss.
Betsy Layne and Paintsville aren’t scheduled to meet again this season.
