Ladycats drop game to tournament favorite

PIKEVILLE – Both Betsy Layne and Shelby Valley are multi-time 15th Region All “A” Classic girls’ basketball champions. Shelby Valley has enjoyed its run more recently and remained a frontrunner over the weekend, defeating Betsy Layne 69-29 in the 15th Region All “A” Classic on Saturday at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.

Struggling offensively, Betsy Layne committed 30 turnovers in the loss.

Shelby Valley advanced to the 15th Region All “A” Classic championship game, while Betsy Layne was eliminated from the tournament.

With the win, Shelby Valley improved to 14-2.

Betsy Layne dropped to 7-8 with the loss.

Shelby Valley shot 56 percent (28-of-50) from the field. The Lady Kats finished 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from 3-point range.

Shelby Valley shot 60 percent (6-of-10) from the free throw line.

Three Shelby Valley players reached double figures in the scoring column. Cassidi Wright scored 18 points, Summer Rose posted 17 points and Lakyn Mullins netted 12 points for the Lady Kats.

Betsy Layne fell behind early and couldn’t recover against Shelby Valley, a program less than two years removed from capturing its most recent overall 15th Region championship.

Fresh off a key win over 58th District/Floyd County Conference rival South Floyd, Betsy Layne shot only 40.7 percent (11-of-27) from the field. The Ladycats finished 3-of-3 from 3-point range but shot only 40 percent (4-of-10) at the free throw line.

No Betsy Layne player reached double figures in the scoring column. Leading the Ladycats offensively, Emily Kidd scored eight points.

Joining Kidd in the Betsy Layne scoring column were Destiny Compton (five points), Katie Tackett (five points), Kaitlin Kidd (three points), Jordan Adkins (three points), Megan Frazier (three points) and Paige Stumbo (two points).

Betsy Layne is scheduled to host Shelby Valley on Feb. 2.
