ROBINSON CREEK – Betsy Layne remained in the loss column on the road at familiar foe Shelby Valley earlier in the week, falling to the newest 15th Region All “A” Classic champion. Host Shelby Valley pulled away to beat the Bobcats 76-57 in a mid-season game.
With the loss, Betsy Layne dropped to 6-11.
Shelby Valley improved to 14-4 with the win.
Betsy Layne lost despite shooting 57.9 percent (22-of-38) from the field. The Bobcats finished 2-of-7 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range.
Betsy Layne shot 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the free throw line.
Shelby Valley’s defensive pressure hindered Betsy Layne’s progress in the non-district matchup. The Bobcats committed 21 turnovers in the setback.
Zach Hamilton led Betsy Layne with a double-double. Hamilton scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Bobcats.
Accompanying Hamilton in double figures in the Betsy Layne scoring column, Grant Osborn scored 16 points and Jakob Ariaz added 10 points.
Betsy Layne featured six different players in its scoring column. Additional scorers for the Bobcats were Kyle Watkins (seven points), Morris Adkins (four points) and Nathan Hall (one point).
Betsy Layne suffered its second loss in four days. Man, a team out of neighboring West Virginia, defeated the Bobcats 88-53 in the Hatfield-McCoy Shootout (Williamson, W.Va.) on Saturday.
Betsy Layne was scheduled to host Prestonsburg for the first of two regular-season 58th District boys’ basketball games on Thursday night. The Bobcats have additional regular-season games remaining versus Magoffin County, South Floyd, Perry County Central, Riverside Christian, Allen Central, Jackson County, Jenkins and Johnson Central.
