Raiders earn top seed


South Floyd seeded first in 58th District Boys’ Tournament

EASTERN – Defending champion South Floyd is the number one seed heading into the 2016 58th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Allen Central High School.

The top-seeded Raiders compiled a 5-1 58th District record during the regular-season.

Tournament host Allen Central is seeded second in the boys’ district tournament, which is slated to tip off inside J. E. Campbell Arena early next week. The Rebels, who completed a sweep of Betsy Layne earlier in the month, finished 4-2 in the 58th District.

Betsy Layne is the number three seed. The Bobcats finished 2-4 in the district.

Rounding out the tournament field, Prestonsburg is seeded fourth. The Blackcats went 1-5 in district competition.

The opening round of the 58th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament will be played Tuesday-Wednesday at Allen Central’s J.E. Campbell Arena. Opening round matchups for the boys’ district tournament are as follows: Tuesday, Feb. 23 – South Floyd vs. Prestonsburg, 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Feb. 24 – Allen Central vs. Betsy Layne, 7:30 p.m.

The boys’ district championship game is set for 8 p.m. inside J.E. Campbell on Friday, Feb. 26.

South Floyd topped Allen Central 35-28 in the 2015 58th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

Both the winner and runner-up from the 58th District will advance to the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.

Betsy Layne earned the top seed for the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament, which will also be held at Allen Central High School next week.
