Shelby Valley runs away from Piarist, 80-20

LICK CREEK – Reigning 15th Region All “A” Classic champion Shelby Valley cruised past Piarist School 80-20 in the 59th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament at East Ridge High School on Monday night.

Shelby Valley improved to 24-3 and advanced to the 59th District title game with the win.

With the loss, Piarist ended its season 3-19.

Shelby Valley shot 56.1 percent (32-of-57) from the field. The Lady Kats finished 13-of-25 (52 percent) from 3-point range, faring nearly as well beyond the arc.

Shelby Valley went 3-for-8 (37.5 percent) from the free throw line.

In an impressive postseason performance, Shelby Valley, less than two years removed from capturing an overall 15th Region championship, featured 13 different scorers.

Savannah Belcher paced Shelby Valley with a game-high 14 points. Following Belcher in double figures for the Lady Kats, Cassidi Wright scored 12 points.

Both Belcher and Wright drained four 3-pointers apiece for Shelby Valley in the victory. Six different Lady Kats sank a 3-point field goal in the win.

Tori Hampton and Lakyn Mullins added 10 points apiece for the Lady Kats, who scored first and never trailed in the tournament matchup.

Shelby Valley flourished outside and inside. As a team, Shelby Valley claimed 33 total rebounds.

Mullins led Shelby Valley inside, securing six rebounds.

Talented sophomore Lauren Wright led Piarist with seven points.

The 59th District consists of Shelby Valley, Piarist, Pikeville and East Ridge.
