EASTERN – Betsy Layne pulled away to beat tournament host Allen Central 55-38 in the opening round of the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament at J.E. Campbell Arena on Tuesday night.
With the win, Betsy Layne improved to 15-14 and advanced to the district championship game.
Allen Central ended its season 2-21 with the loss.
Betsy Layne shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field. The Ladycats finished 6-for-16 (37.5 percent) from 3-point range.
Betsy Layne won convincingly despite shooting only 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from the free throw line.
Megan Frazier paced Betsy Layne with a game-high 18 points.
Following Frazier in the Betsy Layne scoring column, Katie Tackett contributed 13 points.
Emily Kidd recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds for the Ladycats.
Destiny Compton (six points), Jordan Adkins (two points), Lauryn Hall (two points) and Kaitlin Kidd (two points) provided additional scoring for Betsy Layne in the victory.
The Ladycats dished out 14 assists.
Defensively, Betsy Layne recorded 12 steals and four blocks.
The Ladycats overcame 16 turnovers to earn the win.
Kelsey Parsons paced Allen Central with a team-high 12 points. Joining Parsons in double figures, Savannah Watkins tossed in 10 points.
Additional scorers for the Lady Rebels were Hannah Combs (eight points), Emily Johnson (four points), Kacie Poston (two points) and Alexandria Samons (two points).
One of the 15th Region’s top rebounders, Samons pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds for Allen Central in the season-ending setback.
