Basketball Blackcats sweep Floyd County titles

The Prestonsburg K-5 boys’ basketball team won the Floyd County championship.


PRESTONSBURG – Prestonsburg Coach Doug Hopkins and the Blackcat boys’ basketball programs recently completed an unprecedented season with a sweep of the Floyd County titles. Prestonsburg Elementary School and Adams Middle School won the K-5 championships as well as the A-, B- and C-Team Floyd County Tournament titles. It’s the first time that a Floyd County boys’ basketball program has won all four titles.

The Prestonsburg Elementary School K-5 boys’ basketball team finished the season with a 26-0 record. Prior to winning the Floyd County championship, Prestonsburg also won the Right Beaver Classic, Cardinal Hoops Classic and the Blackcat Holiday Hoops Classic titles. Prestonsburg 50, Allen 9: Connor Fugate and Ryan Rose paced the Blackcats with 18 points and 10 points, respectively. Caleb Lawson chipped in seven points for the Blackcats, who jumped out to a 22-point lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

Prestonsburg 39, McDowell 11: Playing its second game of the opening day, Prestonsburg jumped out to a 14-4 lead over McDowell after one quarter and maintained the lead throughout the game. Connor Fugate and Connor Hopkins led the Blackcats in scoring with 12 points each.

Ethan Jarvis tossed in eight points for the Blackcats in the victory.

Prestonsburg 34, May Valley 23: Facing its first halftime deficit of the season, Prestonsburg stormed out of the locker room at halftime to double up May Valley in the third period and take back control of the game. Connor Fugate paced Prestonsburg with 24 points. The Blackcats made 12-of-17 attempts from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

Prestonsburg 34, Betsy Layne 10: The Blackcats attacked the Bobcats’ triangle and two defense to hold an 18-7 lead at halftime and used pressure defense in the second half to hold the Bobcats to three points after intermission. Connor Fugate paced Prestonsburg with 24 points while Connor Hopkins, Caleb Lawson and Ethan Jarvis each scored four points.

Prestonsburg K-5 team members are Connor Fugate, Ryan Rose, Ethan Jarvis, Wes Salisbury, Jon Little, Connor Hopkins, Caleb Lawson, Jaxon Goble, Brayden Goble, Reece Hamilton, Gavin Stephens and Ty Hicks.

“I want to thank Principal Brent Rose, Assistant Principal Sean Ousley and Assistant Principal Carey Davis for all of their continue help for making this an unprecedented season,” Prestonsburg Coach Doug Hopkins said. “We set a new record for elementary basketball, going 26-0. The future looks very bright for both Adams Middle and Prestonsburg High in the coming years.”
