EASTERN – The Prestonsburg Lady Blackcats are still number one in the 58th District. Prestonsburg, under the direction of head coach Brandon Gearheart, defeated Betsy Layne 53-47 in the championship game of the 58th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Allen Central High School’s J.E. Campbell Arena on Friday night.
With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 8-22.
Betsy Layne dropped to 15-15 with the loss.
Both Prestonsburg and Betsy Layne advance to 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville.
Leading Prestonsburg to the win, Tiffany Meadows scored a game-high 21 points. Meadows scored over half of her points at the free throw line.
Accompanying Meadows in double figures for the Lady Blackcats, Reesce Endicott scored 14 points.
Prestonsburg packed a lead out of each quarter. The Lady Blackcats led 14-8 at the conclusion of the first quarter and carried a 28-17 lead into halftime.
Prestonsburg remained ahead after intermission, outscoring Betsy Layne in each of the last two quarters.
Kaitlyn Newsome netted seven points, Jana Jarvis added five points, Allison Hall chipped in four points and Jenna Layne provided two points for the Lady Blackcats in the district championship triumph.
Struggling offensively, Betsy Layne shot 28 percent (7-of-25) from the free throw line. The Ladycats were 2-of-14 from 3-point range in the setback.
Betsy Layne committed 19 turnovers.
Emily Kidd led Betsy Layne with a double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down 13 rebounds. Accompanying Kidd in double figures for the Ladycats, Destiny Compton netted 13 points and Megan Frazier contributed 10 points.
Katie Tackett tossed in five points, Summer Johnson netted four points and Summer Johnson added three points for the Ladycats.
