PIKEVILLE – Prestonsburg is playing its best basketball at the right time. The Brandon Gearheart-coached Lady Blackcats beat Lawrence County 66-51 in the first round of the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Monday night
With the win, Prestonsburg improved to 9-22 and advances to meet 57th District champion Magoffin County in the semifinals of the 15th Region Tournament.
The loss ended Lawrence County’s season, leaving the girls’ high school basketball team from Louisa to finish the campaign 13-18.
Prestonsburg, the champion out of the 58th District, won convincingly despite committing 27 turnovers.
The Lady Blackcats set the tone early, outscoring Lawrence County 18-11 in the first quarter. Even more productive in the second quarter, Prestonsburg outscored Lawrence County 20-11 to lead 38-22 at halftime.
Prestonsburg led 48-31 at the close of the third quarter.
Four Lady Blackcats reached double figures in the scoring column. Leading Prestonsburg to the postseason victory, Tiffany Meadows scored a game-high 23 points.
Following Meadows in double figures for Prestonsburg, Kaitlyn Newsome netted 12 points.
Jenna Layne and Jana Jarvis chipped in 10 points apiece as Prestonsburg prevailed.
Kendra Spaulding led Lawrence County 14 points. Spaulding was the only Lady Bulldog to reach double figures in the scoring column.
In the opening game of the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament, Magoffin County topped 59th District runner-up Pikeville 70-54.
