PIKEVILLE – For the fourth straight season, the University of Pikeville football team will test itself against NCAA Div. I FCS competition with a trip to Eastern Kentucky at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8 at Roy Kidd Stadium in Richmond.
It will be the first meeting between the two programs and also gives UPIKE three straight Thursday night games to open its season.
The Bears start off at Bluefield (Va.) on Aug. 25 for a 6 p.m. kickoff, followed by the home opener against Campbellsville at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1 and then the trip to EKU.
UPIKE is 1-4 against teams at the NCAA Div. I level, most recently losing at Campbell (N.C.) 41-20 last season. The two seasons prior to that, the Bears played at Morehead State, winning 13-10 in 2013 and losing 49-36 in 2014.
Eastern Kentucky will be playing under first year head coach Mark Elder who inherits a Colonel team that finished 6-5 overall last season and 5-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Two of their losses came in overtime, falling 34-27 at Kentucky and 41-34 at Murray State.
UPIKE will serve as EKU’s home opener after it opens 2016 with a trip to Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind.
It will also be a homecoming for third-year UPIKE head coach Allan Holland, Jr., who quarterbacked Eastern Kentucky to back-to-back OVC titles in 2007 and 2008. Holland Jr., was chosen as the OVC Offensive Player of the Year following the 2007 season.
