PIKEVILLE – Betsy Layne has joined 58th District foe Prestonsburg in the regional semifinals. The Ladycats outlasted 60th District champion Belfry 56-51 in overtime in the opening round of the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Tuesday night.

Betsy Layne outscored Belfry 11-6 in an extra period to claim the win and advance in the region tournament.

With the win, Betsy Layne improved to 16-15, moving one game above the .500 mark.

Belfry ended its season 12-14 with the loss.

Betsy Layne shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the field. The Ladycats were 2-of-8 (25 percent) from 3-point range.

Betsy Layne shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the free throw line.

Megan Frazier, who posted one of two double-doubles for the Ladycats, led Betsy Layne with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Following Frazier in scoring for the Ladycats , Emily Kidd delivered 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Registering a double-double of her own, Destiny Compton scored 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for Betsy Layne in the postseason victory.

Narrowly missing double figures in the Ladycat scoring column, Katie Tackett chipped in nine points.

Familiar 15th Region rivals, Betsy Layne and Belfry swapped leads throughout regulation. The Ladycats clung to an 18-17 lead at halftime but managed to pushed its advantage out to a 32-26 cushion by the end of the third quarter.

Belfry outscored Betsy Layne 19-13 in the fourth quarter to pull even and force the game to go into overtime.

Betsy Layne overcame 13 turnovers to claim the win.

Rounding out the Betsy Layne individual scoring, Summer Johnson added two points.

Belfry shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the field. The Lady Pirates were 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from 3-point range.

Like Betsy Layne, Belfry shot 50 percent (5-of-10) from the free throw line.

Olliena Hairston led Belfry with 19 points. Accompanying Hairston in double figures, Lindsey Miller scored 13 points and Kyle Stanley added 11 points. Notching a double-double, Stanley grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for the Lady Pirates.

Betsy Layne will meet 59th District champion Shelby Valley in the semifinals of the 15th Region Girls’ Basketball Tournament on Friday night. Shelby Valley, which is undefeated in games against 15th Region teams, defeated reigning region champion Johnson Central 66-57 in the nightcap on Tuesday night.
