MOREHEAD – Seven members of the Morehead State University football program have been named Preseason All-Americans by USA College Football. Senior slot receiver Justin Cornwall was named to the first team as a return specialist, while six others earned honorable mention status.
Cornwall, along with junior quarterback Austin Gahafer, senior offensive lineman Alex Hey, junior slot receiver Jake Raymond, senior defensive lineman Ronald Cooper, senior defensive back Justin Grier and senior linebacker Luke Keller, were named on the organization’s lists.
Cornwall, from Cincinnati, ranked second in the Pioneer Football League in kick-return average (22.9) while recording a career-long of 47 yards against Jacksonville. He also averaged 12.9 yards on punt returns, including a career-best 58-yarder at Davidson. Cornwall tied for the team lead with six touchdown receptions while producing 420 receiving yards. He was tabbed First-Team All-PFL in 2014.
Gahafer, a Louisville native, ranked second in the conference in passing yards per game (236.7) and touchdowns (23). He totaled 2,840 passing yards, 207 rushing yards and three scores on the ground. Gahafer had a trio of 300-yard efforts.
Hey, from Bryan, Ohio, blocked for an offensive unit which ranked second in the league in total yards per game (429.2) and passing yards (276.1). The front line also ranked second in the PFL in fewest sacks allowed (16).
Raymond, a product of Pickerington, Ohio, led the team in receptions (71), yards (697) and touchdowns (6) for the second consecutive season. He ranked fourth in the PFL in receptions per game (5.9) while averaging 58.1 yards per outing.
Cooper, from Atlanta, finished with 43 total tackles and eight tackles for loss. He also ranked second on the team with four sacks and blocked a kick.
Grier, who came to MSU from Saks, Ala., led the team with seven pass break-ups. He notched 59 total tackles, including 45 solo stops, and recorded two interceptions, both in the Stetson contest.
Keller, hailing from Lucasville, Ohio, paced the team with 87 total tackles while leading the unit with 11 tackles for loss and six sacks. He also forced two fumbles and blocked a kick.
Morehead State will open its 2015 season, the third under Head Coach Rob Tenyer, on Sept. 5 at James Madison. The home opener and Family Weekend are set for Sept. 19 versus Kentucky Christian.
